How To Get The Look Of A Professional Paint Job On Your Own In 6 Steps

Paul Lucas

Paint is one of the most affordable ways that you can spruce up just about any part of your house. If you have never painted your house before, you may be wondering where to start and if you can do the job on your own. While you may be tempted to tackle larger painting projects like painting cabinets, start with something a bit simpler like your walls. Before you reach for your paintbrush and dive into a can of paint, there are a few things you will want to do.

Step 1: Test Paint Samples

Choosing a paint color may be one of the trickiest parts of the painting process. For instance, if you want to paint your room white, you may think there is just one white, but you'll soon realize there are dozens of whites; some of which have blue undertones and some of which have pink undertones. Before you pick a color, grab a sample can of a few options and paint a small stripe of each on your walls. Then, look at them in different types of lighting throughout the day. You will suddenly see that while you may have though one color was perfect at first, it might look too blue or pink in your room.

Step 2: Wipe Down the Walls

Once you have chosen your paint color, you will need to wipe down all of your walls using something basic like a damp cloth. Walls (just like any place in your house) can harbor dust that will make it harder for the paint to adhere to them.

Step 3: Tape

Taping is one of the hardest parts of painting a room, and it is time-consuming, but it is also very important. Taping your baseboards, ceiling, and windows will help you get clean, straight lines that will have the professionals feeling jealous. When choosing tape, go with a high-quality painter's tape that is at least an inch thick, if not thicker. Then, start out in a corner of the room and tape off where you don't want the paint to go. Make sure that you are really precise because if you aren't, you will get paint lines.

Step 4: Cutting

The first step of actually getting your paintbrush wet is called cutting. Cutting is when you cut into the wall right against the tape to help cut everything off. Essentially, you are painting an outline around the ceiling and baseboards of your room so that you can start rolling next.

Step 5: Rolling

Once you have finished cutting, you can start rolling the paint on. When you are rolling, make sure that the roller has an even amount of paint on it so that it goes on smoothly. Then, try to paint in linear lines if you can. The great thing about rolling is that it's really forgiving, and as long as you do multiple coats of paint, it should look super even.

Step 6: Let It Dry

Depending on the type of paint you use, you can remove all of the tape after you have let it dry for several hours. Before you remove the paint, make sure to look at the walls in every type of light (both natural and artificial) to ensure that you haven't missed a spot.
