Misconceptions About Wallpapering Your Walls

Paul Lucas

Do you like the look of wallpaper? Many people do, but many people are also afraid to actually have wallpaper put in their homes because they've heard some negative things about it. The good news is that most of those "negative things" are just misconceptions. Here's a look at a few of them.

1. Wallpaper will get dirty and hold into dust.

This may have been true 50 years ago when wallpaper had the texture of paper. But it's not true today in the slightest. Today's wallpaper is coated with a plastic-like, wipeable outer coating. If it does get dirty, you can just wipe it off with a damp cloth. However, it's really no more likely to get dirty or "grab onto" dirt than a painted wall would be.

2. Wallpaper is tacky and outdated.

If you want to find tacky, outdated wallpaper patterns, you certainly can. There are tiny floral patterns that would look more at home in your grandma's bedroom than in your mode modern house. However, most wallpaper these days is made to look very modern and stylish. You can find wallpaper with bold geometric patterns and even monochromatic wallpaper that lends a very minimalist look. Whatever look you want to achieve with wallpaper, you can achieve it.

3. Wallpaper will hurt your resale value.

Old wallpaper might hurt your resale value since the buyers will see removing it as a project they need to tackle. But if wallpaper is new and in good condition, there's no reason it will be off-putting to buyers. If you are thinking of selling soon, just make sure you follow the same rules you would when choosing a paint color — pick something neutral that someone can decorate around as they desire.

4. Wallpaper is tough to remove.

Are you worried that if you one day decide to remove wallpaper, it will be an enormous project? You might feel this way because you've removed old wallpaper before. It's true that in the old days, wallpaper was often applied with tough glues that made it really hard to remove again. But rest assured that today's wallpaper pastes and glues are a lot easier to remove when needed. There are even wallpaper removing solutions you can use to make it even easier!
