Tips To Help You Prepare To Paint Your Interiors

Paul Lucas

When you have decided that the interiors of your home could use some refreshing and a new look, you may be looking to paint your interior walls and even ceilings. If you have never taken on a project like this before, you may be unsure of what to do and how to proceed with your painting endeavors. Here are a few tips that will help you prepare to paint your home's interiors. Then, you can be sure you are doing everything you can to make your painting project go as smoothly as possible and turn out just the way you want it.

Get Lots of Tarps and Furniture Covers

If you are planning on painting a house you already live in, you will have a great deal of furniture and home items already in the spaces you are painting. And while you may be able to remove some items like televisions and smaller furniture from the rooms you are painting, some furniture may be stuck in there while you paint.

Couches are one such example that may be hard to relocate while you are painting an area, especially if you have a smaller home. As such, you will want to have lots of tarps and furniture covers to ensure that nothing gets damaged. The tarps are mainly to protect your floors from paint spills and spots. You can use a combination of designated furniture covers and tarps on any items that have to remain in the room while you paint.

Be sure to pull everything into the center of the room that cannot be removed from the space so that it is as far from the surfaces being painted as possible and then cover them in several layers of protective covers and tarps.

Always Tape the Seams

When you are preparing to paint, it can be easy to assume that you will be careful enough to avoid drips and drops of paint from getting everywhere. But, paint is liquid and will drip and run once it is on your walls. You do not want to accidentally paint the baseboards or even part of your ceiling when you are applying your paint to the walls.

Because of this, be sure to always tape  the "seams" in the walls that connect to the ceiling, baseboards, and other trim. This will save you hassle of trying to clean up all of your drips and will give you a smooth straight line on your painting projects.

Be Sure You Strain Your Paint

One painting step that many people skip is paint straining. They think that because their paint is new that straining is unnecessary. However, this is not the case. Paint has a tendency to form lumps and clumps, and even if you just brought your paint home from the store, you do not know how long it has been sitting on the shelf before you got it.

As such, you will want to use a mesh paint strainer or other straining apparatus to strain your paint. While this does tack on extra time to the beginning of your painting process, it can save you a great deal of trouble and time in the long run. If your paint is clumpy, it will go on your walls unevenly and create an unsightly mess. As such, always strain your paint and add in an extra few hours to strain all of your paint before applying it to the walls. You will thank yourself for it in the long run.

Now that you know a few tips to help you when you are planning to paint your interiors, you can get the process started as soon as possible.
