Painting Newly Installed Drywall: What You Need To Know

Paul Lucas

After you've installed new drywall, the first thing you want to do is paint it to finish off your remodeling project, but there is still some prep work you need to do after the drywall is complete to ensure your paint job is nearly perfect. You need to take the right steps and paint your drywall properly. Read on for tips to paint your newly installed drywall on your walls.

Clean Your Walls

If you've just put drywall into the room, you may still have a lot of drywall dust in the room and on the walls. You should wipe down the walls with a damp rag and clean the walls thoroughly. If you don't get the majority of the dust off of the walls, it will soak in the paint and could leave bumps or other marks on the walls as well. Once you've finished wiping the walls, allow them to dry before proceeding.

Cover With Primer

Cover the walls with primer, to begin with. Your walls need a coating before you apply paint, as the paint will simply soak into the walls. The primer provides a nice base coating on the walls and will prevent the paint from soaking in and it can also protect your walls from things such as moisture and stains. Apply a coating of the primer in the same way you would paint your walls, cutting it in with a brush and then blending it in with a roller on the rest of the wall. Apply a second coat of primer if necessary, especially if it is really soaking into your walls. Use a primer that is made for new drywall. Use a mold/mildew preventative if your remodeling project is in a bathroom or kitchen, or another room that has a lot of moisture.

Paint Your Walls

After you've cleaned and applied primer to your walls, you can begin painting. You may notice when you paint your walls that the paint is still soaking into the walls. You may need a few coats of paint on your walls, so be patient with this project, as it may take a while to get the right coat of paint on your walls for the look you are trying to achieve. Cut in the walls with the paintbrush and then roll the paint on your walls. Use painter's tape to prevent getting your wall paint on the ceiling and to give you nice even lines. Be sure you take your time and use a good roller and brush, as these are brand new walls.

If you have newly installed drywall in your home, painting it is your next step in the remodeling project. Take your time to get this done to ensure it is done properly, or hire a professional painter to help you get it all done.
