Painting your home interior is a required part of keeping your home maintained and in good condition. Over the years, your home walls get dings and scratches along with dirt and discoloration from age, so you will need to plan to repaint every few years as needed. Here are some recommendations to help you paint the interior of your home successfully.

Collect Your Equipment

To successfully paint the interior of your home on your own, you need to use the type of equipment that is of good quality and close to the standards that professional painters would use. If you select cheap paintbrushes, the bristles are going to fall out and stick in the paint and on your wall, giving you a horrible finish. And if you use poor quality paint rollers, the cardboard within the roller can begin to soften and fall apart on you, leaving particles in the paint and giving you an uneven finish on the paint application.

Look for some good quality paintbrushes that have a good edge where you can use them to cut in on edges along the sides of your walls, and along the floor and the ceiling. Your paint roller should come with an extension end so that you can reach up high when you apply paint to the area closest to the ceiling and on the ceiling. Make sure that if you apply painter's tape, it is a low adhesive to stay in place with a good edge seal but also so it does not remain stuck after you need to remove it when finished painting.

Then, be sure to consider the texture on your walls and ceiling when selecting paint rollers. Rollers come in a variety of naps, and are made this way so that you can get around the bumps and grooves of a bumpy surface or apply paint onto a smooth surface. Use the fluffy paint rollers to apply paint onto textured surfaces.

Clean the Walls

In addition to having the right equipment, you should also prepare your wall surfaces before you start applying paint. Along with dings and scratches, your walls collect dust, residue, grease, and foods that you shouldn't paint over. The best way to clean your walls is to use a microfiber wall mop with a long handle in which you can wipe up and down to remove dust and other materials. You can use this as a dry dust mop or get it wet to help remove difficult spots.
